Is Surat worth visiting for more than its textile and diamond industries?

Surat is not just a shopping destination or a business centre. Thanks to its location along the Tapi River, Surat has a lot of history that goes beyond what the city is famous for. This is why I believe that it makes sense to explore its historic buildings and neighbourhoods before visiting any shop.

Every visit to Surat combines historic locations, local cuisine, and leisure activities. You can spend a morning exploring the port’s history and enjoy some local food afterwards.

I think that two days are enough time to visit Surat. You will be able to explore without having to rush.

Starting with Surat’s connections to the sea

To commence my exploration of Surat, I started with the Surat Castle, which carries considerable significance in the history of the city. The castle dates back to the 1500s and was built to protect the city from Portuguese attacks. This shows how vital Surat was as a trade hub located by the Tapi River.

In addition to examining the castle’s fortifications, I explored its different rooms and halls. This would give me good reason to visit the castle beyond just taking a few photographs. Next, I headed towards the Katargam Gate to examine the Armenian and Dutch cemeteries. This helped me understand the significance of various trading communities to the history of Surat.

Letting Surat’s food shape part of the day

Breakfast was one of my priorities. To begin, I had locho since this lentil-gram flour dish tastes best hot and fresh. It is characterised by its soft and fluffy texture, unlike any commercialised snack.

I also tried khaman separately since having both together would have prevented me from enjoying the taste properly. I also had something sweet, such as ghari, made from concentrated milk, a delicacy typical of Surat.

During winter, I would ask for ponk, consisting of tender green jowar grains that are widely eaten in the area. Avoid planning your summer meals around this dish due to its seasonality.

This is also where accommodation location becomes useful. When comparing hotels in Surat, I checked nearby breakfast places, making it easier for me to start the day with something local.

Seeing Surat beyond its historical buildings

If going on a family trip, I would consider the Science Centre on City Light Road. The interactive exhibits provide children with opportunities to explore scientific ideas. The planetarium also provides another reason to add a stop here.

For a change of setting, I spent an afternoon at Dumas, approximately 21 kilometres southwest of Surat. I also went for a coastal walk, local snacks and a break from the busier streets, rather than expecting an isolated beach. Its popularity with local families is part of the appeal, and it allowed time to enjoy the surroundings without rushing. I kept the return journey flexible, avoiding a beach visit immediately before a train departure, especially with heavy luggage.

Leaving space in a Surat itinerary

I suggest keeping the castle, cemeteries and food stops together on the first day. Remember to reserve the second for whichever experience suited to you, rather than forcing both the Science Centre and Dumas into it.

When researching hotels in Surat, consider these priorities to choose an area. A convenient location will let you spend more time exploring and less time crossing the city.

Is Surat more than just its diamonds or textiles industries? It’s more than just that. I’d come for the port history, leave room for its food and resist filling every hour. Before heading home, I’d make one final breakfast stop, with enough time to sit down.
